English is the oficial language not only in Great Britain (GB) but also in the United States of America (USA) and in many countries all over the world. But the pronunciation, the intonation, and even some words or expressions are diferent from country to country.

The same happens with other languages and countries. Just think of portuguese, it is official language in Portugal and Brazil, but when a Brazilian speaks Portuguese, you immediately note the difference, do not you?

Here are a few examples of British English words and the corresponding American equivalents:

GB - US

  • biscuits - cookies
  • film - movie
  • flat - apartment
  • lift - elevator
  • lorry - truck
  • luggage - baggage
  • petrol - gas (gasolene)
  • petrol-station - gas-station
  • railway - rairoad
  • sweets - candies
  • taxi - cab
  • trousers - pants
  • undergroung - subway

- Gee, it sure is great to hear someone speak my language in this place!

The Englishman looked up and replied:

- Excuse me, sir, I'm not speaking your language. You are trying to speak mine...
